Optical zoom is the "real" zoom on a camcorder. Digital zoom is at the expense of the (already limited) resolution of most camcorders. And zoom is ... great. On a camcorder, you want to be able to get in close to see an expression on some one's face, or isolate an important subject. So most camcorders have great optical zooms, at least compared to digital cameras until recently.

But in the last couple of years the world has changed.

Digital still cameras now also have great optical zooms, and camcorders have finally broken out of their "VGA" resolution and some now offer resolutions that are measure in megapixels. The greater the resolution of the camcorder, the more digital zoom becomes useful (since there are more pixels to work with).

So I would say that (optical) zoom is still a key feature that you want in a camcorder. More is pretty much better. 10x is "ok" and 20x is great. Consider the Canon Elura 80 or the Sony SR40 for camcorders with great zoom.

Hello Neeraj.
I am sure you know by now that optical zoom is the only zoom, anything else does not exist or shouldn't exist.

Optical is the true zoom ratio from the widest to the closest focal length. Digital zoom crops the image to simulate a longer zoom, but in actual fact you are not left with much video data, and it defeats the purpose of buying a camcorder for best picture quality. Digital zoom is a feature that should have never been invented in any camera.

I have to give Canon credit for offering a second digital zoom option that allowed only to use 10% of the digital zoom use in combination to the optical zoom. This would make a 20x optical zoom to around a 30x-80x digital zoom. The 10% digital zoom would only slightly degrade the picture quality, but not really be enough to destroy the original video resolution that the camcorder is capable of.

In-conclusion: You are far better off using coversion lenses to increase optical zoom ratios than using the worst method of digital zoom. That goes for any digital device with a lens.

Happy shopping and good luck!

Thank you for using DigitalAdvisor, the question and answer website the offers free digital advice. Our advisors offer their professional expertise on a voluntary basis to consumers that require digital advice of camcorders and other imaging devices to suit their digital needs. The point system are points that consumers offer to have their questions answered which are merely just points and do not have any other value than making questions and answering fun. Generally, questions are usually answered within 1-3-days from one or more advisors. If you do not get any additional responses after the third day it commonly means that your question has been sufficiently answered or maybe your question was not fully understood and you may need to phrase it. You can always make additional comments to your question in the "Reply" box below. In many cases the "original" question asked are usually answered by the second or third reply, but you can select best answer at any time you feel that the response was sufficient enough to answer your "original" question. Keep in mind that you can always continue to ask for additional advice or post a new question even after selecting best answer to your present question. Once you have selected best answer, your question will be featured in the "Answered Question" section for other consumers to view for reference.
