Hey, Brian.
These following models listed below is what I would recommend which will give you: excellent picture quality, easy for downloading, editing, and making the best quality DVDs. All these models are miniDV camcorders that use miniDV tape which is the preferred choice from professionals over hard drive and DVD disc camcorders. These models records video without an MPEG video compression for best picture quality. They also have an external mic option to record best audio for sound editing.

These models range from $275-$1000

Sony HC96, HC46 (PC only)
The Sony HC96 and HC46 has interval time lapse for animated video

Panasonic GS500, GS320 (PC & Mac)
Both of these GS models offer 3-CCD image sensors for very nice video picture.
Canon ZR700 (PC & Mac)

Canon HV20 (PC & Mac)
The Canon HV20 would be the best choice as it records both in SD(standard video) and HD(high Definition). Plus, it records in 24p(frames per second) that gives you a film look.
