what camcorder is best for normal home videos?

I just want to video my young kids, them playing sports and vacations. I don't need still shots & I don't want to edit. I am so confused as far as do I get a mini tape?? or dvd, mini dvd? I have a vcr and a dvd player. I don't have a cd burner and no firewall stuff. I just want to watch what I tape on my tv. I am replacing my 1993 very large regular vhs camcorder. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of Sony or Jvc, no more than $400.00. I am open to any brand, but I need ease of use. The media part is what confuses me, I've tried to do research but am more frustrated than ever. I can figure out which model once I figure out do I want a tape, dvd, mini dv?, or what else they have out there. What about hard disk I have no clue what that even is? Please help and thanks!

The Canon Elura 100, one of the best mainstream consumer DV camcorders on the market that delivers big performance under $350.

First, I would like to express as an Elura 100 owner, the Canon Elura 100 is action packed with tons of features and functions, more than your average user will ever use. Its an incredible consumer DV camcorder for the money. The Elura 100 is very versatile and designed for just about any shooting situation. The Elura 100 has an impressive picture quality and its about as good as it gets for a single CCD chip consumer DV camcorder. Its a very quite digital camcorder in comparison to the analog camcorders and its extremely quick of switching from play mode to record and vice-verse, about two seconds. I have used one now for about 5 months and I can honestly say that if I was going to make the purchase over again, I would still end up with the Elura 100 for being one of the best all around consumer DV camcorders in that price range

If you are considering higher end camcorders like HD technology, you will need to keep in mind that the higher the quality of video also means more data information is packed in the video picture, so you will need more hard drive storage space and a much more powerful computer to properly work with HD video, for e.g.: with the Elura 100 at the high quality mode you need about 210 MB of hard drive space per recorded video minute, that works out to 12.6 GB for a 60 minute tape. When you edit your movie footage those megabytes double in size. So if you get into HD you are looking at back-end investments. Also if you have not yet, you will need to upgrade your complete entertainment system evenly across the board to get the full benefits of HD.

Â* THE ELURA 100 ACCOMMODATES EVERY CONSUMER AT ALL 3 LEVELS, BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED/PRO:
1) Easy Mode: This feature gives you a fully automatic point-and-shoot camcorder. This is a great feature for people that just want to turn the camcorder on and hit record, or people that had a few extra drinks at a party, then I call it the 'Drunk Mode'.
2) Scene Selection: The Elura offers 8 auto scene selection modes for capturing scenes from fireworks display, night scenes, bright beach scenes to fast action sports. These settings are preset from Canon. The exposure, focus, shutter speed and color balance are preset differently for each scene, so you don't even have to think or fuss with settings, for e.g.: the sport scene mode would be automatically set to a higher shutter speed to capture fast motions for a crisper picture by eliminating the motion blur. You can also manually add special effects in combination with the scene selections.
3) Custom manual mode: Manual functions are a big bonus for any DV camcorder. This is where you can not only be experimental, but control your video the way you want, for e.g.: video recording Hockey vs Baseball, the two scene situations are totally different even though there both classified as sports. so if the sports mode on the scene selection does not quite work for you, then just fine tune your settings to best suit your personal scene situations. Once its set, you can switch from point-and-shoot to your custom settings mode with a flick of a switch. The Elura 100 will remember your last custom settings.

A FEW MORE THINGS THAT ALSO MAKES THE CANON ELURA 100 A BIG PERFORMER IS :
--- The Elura 100 is mainly a one handed camcorder, all your functions, joystick and features are controlled and activated with your thumb and index finger, very important feature for when shooting while you are driving or engaged in sports, like skiing, or if you are carrying things with your other hand, like beach stuff, shopping bags, and etc.
--- The Elura 100 is one of a rare few consumer DV cameras that allow external audio recording and with the option of high quality 16bit audio mode. This is a very important feature for sound quality and sound controlled movie editing.
--- The Elura 100 has nice a color management selection from true clean colors, soft natural colors to punchy vivid colors. I am very impressed with the high quality picture rendition from a large single chip consumer DV camera.
--- The Elura 100 is top loading, so the camcorder does not have to be removed from tripod or any side-mount accessory brackets when changing tapes.
--- The Elura 100 uses mini DV tapes, a preferred choice for digital movie editing as the video information is recorded uncompressed allowing no data loss for best quality.
--- The Elura 100 has true wide screen data recording, not like other DV camcorders where they crop or stretch the picture to simulate wide screen only resulting in a degrading picture quality.
--- The Elura 100 has some manual controlled features, such as manual focus and manual exposure levels, critical features for a DV camera, any manual options you can get from a consumer DV camera is a big bonus.
--- The Elura 100 allows you to keep on shooting if you run out of video tape, "what!", "that's right!". The Elura 100 has a back up feature that gives you the option to switch over and record video onto your SD card in case you don't have an extra blank tape with you or if you run out of tape in a middle of a shot where seconds are just to critical to put in a new fresh tape right away. Its like having a built in hard drive camera, but better, because if a built-in hard drive DV camera malfunctions you are screwed. I would recommend putting a minimum 1GB SD card in the Elura 100 for back-up video recording.
--- The Elura 100 has an easy control button feature that allows you to instantly switch back from your custom settings to fully automatic point and shoot mode. This feature is very convenient for when you hand over your camcorder to someone else to shoot without having to give them a DV camera instructional orientation every time.
---The Elura 100 allows you to flawlessly shoot stills at the same time during video taping so you can capture both video and stills for those never again moments.
---The Elura 100 has a built in video light which makes it convenient and portable for low light video conditions, also, it can be used for low light still shots which is more critical than video.
---The Elura 100 has an intergraded lens cover which is much more favorable than a lens cap. You do not have to worry about loosing the lens cap or hearing it on your audio recording from dangling and banging around.
--- The Elura 100 has digital dubbing capabilities so you can transfer your VHS tape collection to DVD. The money you can save on this service feature alone will more than pay for the Elura 100.
--- The Elura 100 has a good menu management where Canon has separated each selection menu for each dedicated type of camera function. At first it might seem a little complex but you will soon see that it will all make smart sense.
---The Elura 100 has allot of other great features where both beginners and pros can have fun with creating some cool in camera video effects.

The Elura 100 is a great choice for movie editing on MAC or PC and works like a charm with movie editing software. You can create DVDs and you can also transfer your VHS/Video 8 tapes to DV or DVD with the dubbing features.

Happy Shopping
