what's a pixel

do i want a higher number of pixels, or a lower?

Pixel stands for "picture element." Think of it as a "dot." In printer parlance, it would be DPI or dots per inch. And the higher the better. Same with pixel. The more the better. More pixels means higher resolution, sharper picture, more vibrant colors.
