Is the Canon GL2 claassified as an HD camera?

I own a Canon GL2 and I pay the extra ammount of money for the higher quality "HD mini-dv's." Are these higher quality tapes a good investment or should I stick with the standard mini-dv's?

It's kinda like paying for premium gas. You'd like to think that it's better for your car, but mechanics will tell you that all you're doing is paying extra for your gas when you don't really need to.

no. the GL2 is not an HD camera (that's the XH G1) and you're paying extra money and not getting the benefit for it, other than the higher quality tapes. I'd save the money and stick with the standard minis. The quality of the image won't improve much with a costlier tape.

Hi Quinn.
The Canon GL2 is not an HD camcorder, but would probably produce a better quality than a copy from a HD compressed edited format.

According to my past experiences, premium tapes have never improved the image quality from the camcorder itself. Premium tapes generally have a better tape coating to minimize drop outs, and allows you to get longer tape life of reusing the tapes over and over again.

Bottom Line:
- If you use inexpensive tapes only once for recording and the video picture quality is very clean, then stay with that brand and pay less money
- If you use the tapes over and over for recording and play back, then paying the extra money for premium tapes can be worth it. Because the tape coatings do wear down each time the tape records or plays.

An extreme example is like renting a VHS movie from a BlockBuster that has been played many times over. It gets to a point where the tape is not worth watching anymore.

There is nothing wrong with using both for right needs.

Happy Shooting!
