when turning the camera on it makes a loud noise when it picks up the tape are all gl2s like this?

Define loud noise. You can hear the camcorder thread the tape around heads initially. But it shouldn't be a "loud noise." Being this camera is a few years old now, your GL2 may need servicing. How many hours are on it? Do you use it alot? Try cleaning the heads and blowing out the mechanism.

yea its the tape threading around the heads it seems to be loud. Its way louder than my handicam. I need it to be as silent as possible for hunting purposes.

Hmmm. Have you talked to Canon about it? It shouldn't be that loud. But perhaps a housing is appropriate ... like an underwater one? Or better yet, build your own sound proof case.
