There are several options missing from the GS500 which were a part the GS400. Missing are the pass through feature and auto exposure modes. However, the 500 has inherited procCinema and widescreen modes. Also image stabilization. Nice features to be sure. It also has a photoflash built in for quick on the spot digital still shots, which can be advantageous in the moment.

On the downside, the microphone position cause hand noise when cradling the camcorder in the left hand. And if you want to use an external mic, there is no headphone jack to insure you're recording from it without relying on the LCD display to be sure.

Word on the street though, is that the GS500 is not MAC compatible, though it does come with firewire support. So, if you're planning on cutting your wedding vids with your MAC, you need to verify that you can capture into your Apple, or you're better off looking for a comparable Canon model. Like, perhaps the Canon GL2, even if it is nearly twice the price.

But in the end, it's a pretty nice unit.
