Alot has to do with the kind of documentaries you're shooting. Sweeping vistas of a nature film? You definitely want wide screen. Interview based? Well, just about any camera can handle this, but I'm pointing towards the Canon XL2 or GL2, or the Sony DCR-VX2100. Yes, they're pricey. But you don't shoot a documentary just to play on a 32" TV Set. You shoot it to be projected, broadcast, and sold on DVD. It's worth it to look at the heavy hitters.

But you also want to make sure you can edit. Which means on a PC. And if that's MAC, you're ahead of the game going straight to Canon.
