Need help troubleshooting video capture

I cannot capture video from my HV20 to my computer using either Windows Movie Maker or Ulead Videostudio. I have the camera connected by firewire to a 400 1394 card, both programs recoginize the camera, I initiate video capture, but neither program will record any video. Both give me an error message telling me to check my settings. HDV/DV showing on LCD. Tried AV>DV in both On and Off. Nothing works. Anyone want to offer a suggestion what I might be doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Well, it may be that your computer simply isn't powerful/fast enough to handle the HD stream. And Windows Movie Maker has to be with Vista Ultimate to support HD.

Normally, I would recommend WinDV for mindv capture, but unfortunately, it hasn't been updated to support HD. Have you tried Adobe Premiere Elements? you can download a free demo to see if it works. But it all comes down to what kind of computer you're running. A little more information would help to troubleshoot.

James, thank you for your answer. Sorry, I have been out of pocket on a project and have not had time. I downloaded the trial of Adobe Premiere Elements. First time I tried to capture a tape it shut the program down with an error code. The file was there, but when I watched it back the video and audio were choppy. Second time it seemed to capture but then the program seemed to get locked up on the quality review/ stamping phase (I forget the exact wording). Here is the details on my computer: Windows XP, Dell Dimension B110, Celeron CPU 2.53 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM. Any other info I could provide that would be useful? Aside from testing the Adobe program to see if it works, what program would you recommend I upgrade to for HD (tending toward simple - I'm not Speilberg)?
