High-Def video is limited to three minutes, despite having a class 6 SDHC card of 4gb. What gives?

I have the canon TX1, and a high speed MMC (class 6) 4gb. It should be able to take something like 45min of video. But after three minutes, u sually less, the indicator on-screen starts blinking, it stops recording, and processes the movie clip. I can set it down to a lower resolution and it will record for much longer, but I am interested in the high-def feature.

Davy, it's HiDefinition video. That's going to take up a hell of a lot more space than SD. 3 minutes for a 4GB card sounds about right.

No, that's not correct - Canon's own web site says a 4gb card should hold about 15 minutes of video.

i have a class 6 8 Gig and no such problem; look at http://powershot-tx1.blogspot.com/ to have the list of cards that seems to work with this camera

It is possible you bought a knock off clone card - there is a discussion about this at http://forums.powershot-tx1.com/index.php?topic=139.0

The summary is that you can find out if your card is a slow knockoff by using the card benchmark (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Benchmarks , TX1 is at bottom) that comes with the CHDK firmware upgrade (safe to use - does not modify camera - goes onto your SD card). The CHDK software and how to use it is at http://chdk.wikia.com/
