Can I record standard definition with the hf100 also? I'm slowly getting more HD equipment.

Some cameras will let you switch between sd and hd recording like the hv20.

Yes. All HD cameras will give you this option. You can also reencode HD to SD. That's how I'd do it. Record in HD, capture to your PC and reencode it to SD, then burn the HD clips to DVD to archive them. Then, when you have the ability to use HD, you can go back to the original source HD footage and reburn in HD.

Not sure how to create a follow up question, so I will post the question here itself. Is this HD to SD re-encoding possible with the standard software provided with the HF100? I am interested in doing exactly what has been mentioned in the reply - i.e., record in HD, burn as SD on to DVDs for now, and later burn the original HD to, say a blu-ray disc.

This answer is probably very late, but needs to be here, in case someone else reads this. The original answer isn't actually correct. This camcorder, much like most tapeless HD camcorders, CANNOT record in Standard Definition. There are some HDV (MiniDV tape-based) models that also support Standard Definition, so you can play back old MiniDV tapes on them, or record in SD. However, tapeless models generally don't do it, and neither does HF-100.

However, Pixela software that comes with the Vixia line will allow you to do exactly what you want, which is record your stuff in HD, then transfer to PC, edit and burn a standard-def DVD that's playable in ordinary DVD players.

Of course, it is recommended to keep a backup of all original AVCHD files from the SDHC card, so when you change your TV to HD and get a Blu-ray player, you can re-import all that AVCHD and create HD optical discs (Blu-ray compatible DVDs or similar) for full HD playback.
