Ease of transfering movie files to an IMAC with IMovie HD or versions besides the terrible 8?

How easy is it to transfer movie files from the Canon Vixia HF100 to a Mac with IMovie 6, 7 or HD? Do I have to convert my files? If so, how? I am looking to use this camera for a high school film production class, and will be using school's Macs. (And I want to stay away from IMovie 8.)

What I'd do is record to SD cards. Get a USB memory card reader and it's simple drag and drop. Where you're going to run into trouble is that the HF100 shoots in AVCHD, which means you'll need to reencode it into ssomething iMovie 6 can handle (it does't support AVCHD, only on the intel platform/imovie 8 is it supported. And Final Cut, of course).

Anyway, I recommend using MPEG Streamclip by Squared 5. It's free and is a great solution.

I am not sure MPEG Streamclip can actually read AVCHD files. Their site doesn't mention anything and an extensive google search on the subject yielded negative responses. However, VoltaicHD can do exactly that (for $35). For all those who don't have iMovie08, or have an older PowerPC (G5 or G4) Mac, VoltaicHD can transcode AVCHD into AIC (or Apple ProRes if they have Final Cut), which chan then be easily edited in iMovie HD (or anything else that handles QuickTime files on the Mac).
