"Please Remove Cassette"

Anyone seen the message "Please Remove Cassette" when trying to put in a new or used cassette?

I was reviewing cassettes for available time and decided I needed to get a set of new. When I placed the new tape in, I got this message. It repeats itself now with whatever tape I put in.

I have followed the reset instructions provided by Canon to no avail.

Anyone else seen this? (I went out and got a new Canon ZR800 today because I need to record this weekend). But if I can correct this, then I have two good cameras.

First off, make sure the casette record lock isn't set. It's a tiny slide which prevents you from recording on the tape. Also, check to see if there's anything preventing the cassette from properly sliding in place. Take it out and put it back in. This is a feature that prevents the camera from eating the tape should the cassette be in there incorrectly.

You may have also some condensation in the machine. Try placing it in a warm dry place or use the silica packet that came with the camera. Run it open and on and let it dry out.

Absent that, it may be time for a service.

I can put the tape in, but it gets rejected, thus ejected. The message appears along with 4-5 beeps.

Does it do it with every tape you use? I'd also check for any foreign objects stuck inside. But condensation is the main culprit, IMHO.

Then again, with this cameras age, and depending on how often it's been used, it may be due for a service, or a cleaning at the very least.

Yep, every tape.....

Is there a way to Clean it without needing to send it for repair?

Could I use a can of compressed air (like they sell at Office Depot or Office Max?

Thank you.

Sure. Just try and avoid "freezing" the innards with the compressed air - if you tilt it wrong, the low temperature gas that propells the air will escape and cause a brief frost on it. This could damage your electronics, but I doubt it. Just be careful to keep the can level when you spray it.

If that doesn't work, however, you may have to send it in for a repair estimate. Remember the rule of thumb ... if it costs north of 50% of the original purchase price to repair, you're better off just buying a new (and upgraded) unit.

Good luck.

You did. Well, I hope you don't have plans to edit the footage. If you want to shoot video and then edit it to take out wasted scenes, add titles and music, etc., you're taking a hit in video quality by shooting native with a DVD camera. This is because the video on DVDs is encoded to MPEG2, a compressed format. It's great as an end of the line format, but not for shooting source footage. Likewise, hard drive based camcorders, while convenient, tend to record in MPEG2 (only JVC gives you an option to record in AVI). This gives you the same problem. Additionally, you will also have to "re-encode" (also called demuxing) the footage into an editable format. It's a hassle for those of us who wish to edit our videos as a hobby.

However, for DVDs, you'll need to take that DVD and "rip" it to your PC and then encode it into a more editible format. I recommend DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. They will get your footage off the dvd and onto your PC. You can then use something like Videoera (PC) or Handbrake (Mac) to encode it to a more editable format. Depending on what editing software you use, you may be able to import mpeg2 and even VOB files directly. But understand that you're already starting with compressed footage, so the resolution quality will not be as good as if you had shot native with MiniDV tape and captured to your PC.

What I did is, manually turn the tape, found the tape is too tight (I even broken it), has to open the casette, and loose it, and glue it. some of the tape been over stretched, always get warning for this part of tape, but if I manually turn it to pass this part of tape, other part of tape working fine.

Thanks 'Thanks' I have tried the tape in my own camcorder and it works fine. I have also tried other tapes in my brothers camcorder and it does the same thing. It was working fine uptil last night - I fear it is something I have done and I will just have to replace or repair
