I'm sure you've checked this, but according to page 146 of the manual (troubleshooting) the may be due to not having the camera set for "camera." Absent that, you may also want to check with support for an RMA return and repair. Is it still under warranty? Was it dropped recently?

Imagine, my ZR 70 MC showed these symptoms on Christmas Eve,2006. Ouch! As of October, there are now 12 Models which fall under this advisory. They think high heat and Humidity are to blame. I guess 4 hours of Hawaii video might qualify. The link does give a phone number to have it fixed free,no shipping costs. Thanks, Bill Teeple

Aha!

Mine actually exhibited this black screen about October 2005. Never got it repaired since it cost more to do shipping and probably pay for repair costs so I bought a new camcorder.

Anyway, thanks for this tip!

Big Basketball game for my son. This camcorder went black. I thought it was me and felt really bad for missing the game because I was playing around with the stupid thing. All of a sudden it started again, but we missed most of our Christmas because it did it again! I don't live in humidity or used it in any humid areas. Thanks for the website. I am willing to give it a try - we are not financially rich and can't just go buy another!

You may also want to contact Canon to see if you can return it for RMA and just get a new one.

Has anyone experienced this with the new HV10?

This just happened to me last night. I bought the HV10 a little more than 3 months ago and probably used it 5 times.

Its v. frustrating as the HV10 cost me $1200.
