Camcorder Consumer Guides
The Best New Pocket Camcorders
Things have changed since Pure Digital first unleashed the original Flip Video pocket camcorder in 2007. That model, which was considered an awesome concept for its time, recorded standard def video with no optical zoom or image stabilization, was powered by two AA batteries, and came with 512 MB of built-in flash memory. It was considered a heck of a deal for $150. Less than three years later, those specs are almost laughably mediocre. As always, competition within and at the edges of the pocket camcorder market has led to great things for us consumers. Cell phones can take decent videos, so the place for low-quality, standard-def standalone camcorders is questionable. What's more, nearly every camcorder manufacturer has entered the pocket-cam market, spurring an arms-race of better features like 1080p HD video, still-image shooting, and image stabilization for the same low prices. And so here we are in early 2010, with a batch of promising 1080p models from several manufacturers. The video quality, features and performance still aren't up to snuff compared to more expensive mainstream models, but it's better than cell phone videos and good enough for most users -- after all, good enough is what we're looking for at this price point. We're still waiting for an announcement from Pure Digital about new Flip models, which always have the potential to generate buzz and change the game, but based on what we know now, these four models will be among your best bets for cheap, casual-use camcorders this year.

These three camcorders record between 30 and 120 minutes of standard-definition video to 3-inch "mini" DVDs that can be played back in most common DVD players.
