Editors' Comments

The JVC GZ-HD30 is nearly identical to its more expensive relative, the GZ-HD40. Sporting a smaller hard-drive (80GB), the GZ-HD30 still can take up to 6 hours of the highest quality (1920 x 1080) HD video. In fact, the hard-drive space is the only major difference separating the GZ-HD30 and the GZ-HD40. So, if you can stand having 80GB of hard-drive space instead of 120GB, the GZ-HD30 will save you some money.

DO NOT BUY THIS (Stew - 7/15/09)

Every thing about this product is great, it's small, it's lightweight, it's very simple to use. The image quality on playback is fantastic. The audio quality could do with a little improving, however you can fix an external mic or use another source for recording audio, so for 'family fun' use its ideal. The battery is as you would expect, if you are using it for along time you will need to charge it for the next days use. The on side screen, is clear, and the menue system for all the settings is great, so simle and straight forward, I dare say my Mum could work it. So, Why is this review titled "DO NOT BUY THIS"? if every thing seems of good quality and ease of use? well it's simple. This product has proven to be environmentally temperamental. In the park, every thing is fine, at home, everything is fine, hnd held everything is fine. However, if you are trying to record in an environment that may be loud, or mount it on a tripod that is sat on a surface that may vibrate due to construction or loud noise, infact anywhere where this product is susceptible to vibration, even when hand held then you are in for a period of trouble. Error messages about the recording surface being damaged, error messages stating "Recovery Mode" needs to be activated. Having to wait while the product resets and reboots means you miss events and precious moments.
Now you might think that I have been using this product in a way that it was not intended but I do not think it unreasonable to want to put your £400 camcorder on a tripod in the pub and record your mates band play a live set without it crashing 10- 15 times in the space of an hour and only letting you capture 1 - 2 minutes fottage at a time before crashing AGAIN. Other than that, It's great.
