Great Camera for the money!
( - 12/29/05)Being a newbie to the camcorder scene, I had no pre-conceived expectations on any particular brand or model of camcorder. All I knew is what my budget was and that I wanted to buy the best possible camera for the money.
Well after reading up on all of the specs and reviews for camcorders in this price range I decided on the PVGS65.
I can honestly say that I am extremely pleased with the overall performance of this unit. The picture quality is excellent in good and moderate lighting thanks in part to the 3 CCD's I'm sure,(all be it low light shooting is about as good as you can expect in this price range and is probably the best in class).
The joystick navigation system makes it really easy to change most of the common functions with just your thumb. The reviewer at camcorderinfo.com stated he didn't care for the zoom button sitting on your middle finger, however, I have no problem with this and it took no more then a couple of hours to feel really comfortable with it and master controller the speed of the zoom using my middle finger. Besides, this keeps your index finger ready to snap stills of needed (more on this below).
As for the features of this camera? I could not find another camera in this price range that included as many features and manual controls as the PVSG65.
The WAF(wife acceptance factor) was great, as she was able to immediately pick up the camera, turn it on and start recording in fully automatic mode, without any instruction.
The still pictures are OK for 4x6 prints or web, but don't expect to print 8x10's to hang on your wall. One nice feature is the ability to snap a low res picture to SD card, while still recording to tape (you need to switch to camera mode to take a high res 1.2 MP photo). Being an avid photographer, I know its better to get a low res picture then no picture at all, which makes this feature very handy.
Oh ya, almost forgot to mention, I don't think you'll find a camcorder at this price point that includes an infrared remote that allows you to control most recording and playback functions from a distance.
Over all, I would highly recommend this camera to anyone that wnats to capture those special memories and not break the bank doing so.
