I have the Pan. VDR-D200 and would like to convert the MPEG-2 files to something like an AVI. file for easier editing. Do you have any suggestions?

I have tried several "shareware" file converters" that are suppose to be able to convert a MPEG-2 to a avi. file but i always get error messages. My goal is to be able to edit my MPEG-2 files created by my Panasonic VDR-D200 on "Windows Movie Maker"

Recording video on DVD is convenient for playing back on a DVD player but is not easy to edit from a disk. First, you will need to purchase editing software that can accept MPEG-2 files to download from the camcorder; second, downloading from a DVD disk has to be accomplished as a single large .AVI file that requires a lot of RAM (memory) and a powerful CPU/graphics & motherboard; third, unwanted scenes and clips cannot be skipped. (tapes can be fast-forwarded to desired scenes and clips at any time then downloaded onto the editing software). Fourth, MiniDV tapes are reuseable after rewound. DVD+/-RW disks (re-writable disks) must be erased entirely with a computer program before becoming useable. DVD+/-R disks are disks that can recorded once only.
