I'm really not in to the videography thing so I can't offer any techno-talk about the camera. However, I can say that the camera is so very easy to use and it will do what I need to do. I've read a lot of negative reviews about dark video image results in well lit environments—I'll have to check this out for myself. I do agree that the software is very basic (to be expected for the price), but I've had no problems importing video or still images. To the 'bashers' who complain about computer operating systems not recognizing the camera, the problem is more related to lack of clarity in the owner's manual. If this helps anyone out there, the USB connection will not happen as does other devices and appear on the computer screen. You must connect the USB cable to your PC and camera, turn on the camera, and open the view window to execute the connection process. I'll bet you didn't know that, did you? There's nothing wrong with the camera functions—user error.

I purchased this camcorder as a Christmas gift for my wife and myself. I used it for a month recording the fun of our 18 mo. old. When it came time to unload the video and start creating DVDs I learned that the camera records in some proprietary format, which only seems to work with the software packaged with the camcorder. The software included is clunky and unfriendly to use. It basically only functions as a way to dump your video onto your PC and do some very basic editing. I had hoped to be able to use one of the free editing software like Windows Movie Maker or Wax. Needless to say, those programs could not import the video. In the end, I returned the camcorder to Costco and plan to purchase a different make/model.

Nice camera, big hard drive, cool SDHC card.
Good luck getting the videos actually into your computer. Absolute crap software comes with the camera.
Your computer WILL NOT recognize the camera when the camera is plugged into a USB port.
