Canon Vixia HF20 Comments & Questions (write your own!)
Thanks for the tip James, I was hoping for a solution like that!
Does anyone know anything about this that they could help me with? I really like this camera, but I don't want to purchase something that won't work. It says that the still pictures will work, but I'm nevous about iMovie, etc.
But the Elgato turbo and it will take half the time to transfer.
720p and 1080i are not the same thing
all HD cameras shoot in 720 vertical lines verses 1080
all HDTV today is shot in 720

I bought the HFS 100 Did not like the results, I have a HF 100 and love it, but want the latest, I sold the HFS 100 and bought the HF20 and WOW what a great camera, shape clear pictures and video better than HF100 and for sure better than HFS 100. I can't understand NEG reviews on HF20 it is fantastic, as far as low light issues thats what it has manual controls for. I could not be happier.

I'm so disappointed since I found out that for 6 months I might have been taping my 6-month-old daughter at 1080i and not 1080p.
Is 720p really better that 1080i?
Would I be better off buying a Nikon D90 for the 720p? Or a new Canon T1i which records at 720p + 1080p (20fps for the latter)?
Thanks... :(
There is no difference
1080p is better than 720p
*720p displays 720 horizontal lines on the screen for 1/30th of a second. This is called progressive scan (the 'p'). These lines are shown at the same time every 1/30 of a second. (You may not know but this is significant)
1080i compresses the original 1080 lines because they aren't all displayed at the SAME time. Instead, they are woven together like fabric where one line is shown for 1/60th of a second and then it changes to another line for 1/60th of a sec.(note that the frame rate is still the same but the image is shown for half the amount of 720p). This method is known as interlaced footage (hence the 'i').
CONCLUSION?: For everyone commenting here you will not notice a difference. For people who are going to videotape sports and care about whether there is a slight "stepping bars" (you get this with interlaced film and fast motion getting captured) you will want 720p which eliminates that concern. For everyone else, it just doesn't matter. But once again: The HF20 records in 1920-1080 which is in fact 1080p which no one understands here.
