The Canon ZR60 offers an appealing option for camcorder buyers on a tight budget. While the ZR60 receives many good reviews, advanced users should be cautioned that despite its affordable price and lengthy feature list, there are recurrent complaints about its ability to film indoors or in low light.

However, for DVDs, you'll need to take that DVD and "rip" it to your PC and then encode it into a more editible format. I recommend DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. They will get your footage off the dvd and onto your PC. You can then use something like Videoera (PC) or Handbrake (Mac) to encode it to a more editable format. Depending on what editing software you use, you may be able to import mpeg2 and even VOB files directly. But understand that you're already starting with compressed footage, so the resolution quality will not be as good as if you had shot native with MiniDV tape and captured to your PC.
Oppositely, miniDV cameras ( digitalcamera-hq.com/camcor... ) are much more robust. Cameras like the Elura 100 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/camcor... ) are much better in format because once you've captured, edited and then burned to DVD, you aren't recompressing already compressed footage, like using the DVD camera would force you into.
Is that correct???

All consumer camcorders are classified as in the same size and weight category, so the actual model does not matter.
The best tripods for video camcorders are the tripods with a fluid head. Fluid heads can pan and tilt much more smoothly without jitters/shakes than standard still photo tripods. The heavier or sturdier the tripod the better the cam movements you get. With higher quality tripods, you can interchange fluid heads and tripods to suit the shooting situation, but they are also more expensive.
For consumer palm size camcorders less than 2-lbs, you can get an inexpensive video fluid head tripod for less than $60.

Absent that, if your borther in law has a miniDV camera with a USB connection, you shoudl be able to place the miniDV tape in it and capture it that way.
BTW - your camera model was one of a host of cameras that suffered from a faulty CCD chip. Check out this ( usa.canon.com/consumer/cont... ) from Canon regarding it.

Malfunction:

This happened while I was changing my cassette and I accidentally closed the cassette compartment ( without any cassette inside the compartment ), and then I tried to open it back up, but it would not open after the compartment comes up. It goes right back down after it waits a while and it gives me a loud 4 to 5 beeps.
