Editors' Comments
This interesting little hybrid works equally well as a digital camera and a camcorder. The Sanyo Xacti HD2 follows up the innovative HD1 by addressing some of the concerns that peeved users of the earlier model. In particular, Sanyo has put significant effort into improving the low-light functionality of the HD2, which is a welcome enhancement. Beyond that, it's still a great HD handheld, capable of taking up to 3 hours of HD (720p) footage on a single 8GB Secure Digital memory card. Plus, Sanyo has knocked about $100 off the price tag. The 10x optical zoom and 7 megapixel sensor ensures that your still photos will very high-quality, and that combination camcorder/digital-camera devices don't have to sacrifice anything.

Sanyo Xacti HD2 Comments & Questions (write your own!)
If being hemmed into that proprietary pipeline doesn't bother you, fine. Camcorders with 7.0MP still options are just starting to emerge. The sanyo-xacti-hd2 ( digitalcamera-hq.com/digita... ) is an HD camcorder which has the 7mp still option. What gives me pause is that it records in mpeg4, which is compressed - even for HD and would be a hassle to edit.
Understand though that even though the Xacti records in HD, the wrap is that the image quality isn't all that great since it encodes in MPEG-4 - which is a great standard for downloading internet video, but for source video it's VERY compressed. You will then have to recompress it once you're editing is done. Making it suffer again.
This camera should be a decent option for you. The 7MP resolution will allow for sharp photos and the video records in HD. As for taking photos while videoing, based on the web manual ( sanyo-dsc.com/english/produ... ) it does not look like this camera will perform this function. Look for a camera with the Ambarella A390 chip ( ambarella.com/news/press_re... ) in the near future to utilize the capability you'd like.

This technology was only announced at the end of January. I was unable to find any cameras that have already integrated it, but it looks like Sanyo might pick it up in the near future. I would hazard a guess at 6 months to a year before you see it on a shelf though.
Raymond, as for your need for a close distance focusing, the Canon FS11 ( usa.canon.com/consumer/cont... ) will focuse as close as 10mm (closer than an inch) at the widest angle. Good luck and happy shooting.
