Never buy any product from sony! (lion — 03/27/2010)
This sony ONLY worked one year for me. After ONE year and a few day the cover of len can't open anymore! I fixed it with the len open all time ( blocked the len with other material ) and it worked for a while. About two years its photo function didn't work. On 3rd year its function of displayer didn't work anymore. Right now I have to take the disk out of canera and put the disk in my PC's DVD driver to read the video on the disk. It is a gabarge now.

Sony Customer is service horrible and expensive! (Derek — 12/14/2007)

I bought into the Sony Hype, but after numerous failure's I must say "my Sony buying days are over!" I own a Sony laptop that has been in for service twice with an outrageous flat rate fee of repair, 3 digital cameras with all defective Sony components bad lens on one DSC-W1, battery door spring and latch on another DSC-10 I think , LCD on the other one of the first affordable digital Sony cameras all bad out of warranty and flat rate not worth it!, granted purchased over the past several years. .
Now my last purchase was a DVD403 handycam- zoom in/out is not working 2 months out of warranty $300+ flat rate fee!!!
I refuse-I have since purchased several Nikons L4,L11,L6 I think and my newest baby-D40X. Nikon has been awesome.
Bye Bye Sony! You got enough of my money!

No sony any more! (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

When I see this review "Excessive Repair Charges - Broken Lens Cover (Camcorder HQ user review)

Three weeks after the 1 year warranty was up, the lens cover did not open. We sent it to Sony for repair and was charged $369 - just to replace the lens cover. We were extremely disappointed in the costumer service from Sony repair. We will not purchase another Sony product because of it!"
I donnt think it is true. Now my DVD403 Camcorder's len cover doesnot work just after one year and went there for a price to fix it. It is true. I will throw it away! It is a garbage!

Software (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

My issue is with the software provided with the DVD403! What's up with that? It seems to be very cumbersome and not user friendly. I bring in my movie and then revise it in ROXIO 8. I'm also finding that the provided software seems to "fight" with my other programs... i.e. ROXIO 8!

Great camcorder for the average user (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Over the past 15 years I have gone from 8mm to VHS-c to a digital video camera, I have found the best yet with the Sony DVD-403.
The picture quality is excellant, the ease of use is excellant, and there are some great features like the touchscreen for playback controls.
Being able to pop the DVD into a pc or DVD player and play back is great, as is the ease of copying the DVD to send to grandma.
I love the DVD format for being able to quickly find particular scenes, and to look at what I have recorded, and not worry about finding the place where I stopped recording so I dont record over what I have already done.
The only downside is the difficulty editing what you have shot, but for most of us amateurs that is not such a big deal.

Cannot record using AC power (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Yes there is an AC adapter, but you have to turn the camera OFF to re-charge the battery. This is weird and unexpected. It is very easy to forget the limitation, then plug in the camera while it is ON (as with all our other Sony cameras). So you think you are re-charging the battery, but actually aren't.

Unexpected limitations mar otherwise solid product (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

Yes, it is great to have an immediately playable DVD, but ...
a. Max time per DVD is 27-30 mins. So your video of the wedding etc may have an unexpected gap due to need to install a new blank DVD.
b. If you use non-Sony media, you get to see a big blue rectangle for a few seconds EACH time you turn on the camera. It urges you to switch to Sony media (although non-Sony media otherwise works fine). What's with that blatant advertising?
c. You don't know for sure if your camera and sound settings are right until you finalize a disc and put it in a real DVD players.
d. Apparently you can't play back a completed DVD on the camera itself, ie, using the LCD as a small display.
e. You can't simply copy video from the DVD or the camera to an MPEG or AVI file. You must use included software to move stuff around.
f. To edit or erase video you have to copy it all to a PC, then use Sony's included (limited) software, then copy it back to the camera on a new DVD blank.

Have to say I am disappointed, given the high price and potential of this camera.

Great Camera but it does not support MAC O/S (anonymous — 07/18/2006)

This is a great camera but Sony will not support any Apple products. I now have 8cm DVD's of my newborn Baby that I cannot edit unless I repair and upgrade my Windows PC.

Too bad. I am returning it today.
