Sony Handycam DCR-SX40 Reviews

This camera's awesome. I was using a Point and Shoot for a while, but that's so low q next to this. File type is easy to use, all the functions are easy; but mine's broken down so many times. It's zoom lense got jammed and I had to send it off the sony. (took 8 weeks to get it back) Then the touch screen died and wouldn't reconize anything "touching" it. And finally, i guess some wires cam loose to the screen. When it's turned on, all i see is white, still records, still does everything, you just can't see. I've uploaded the stuff off of it cuz I remembered where the buttons were, but it's really annoying to have to send it away for another 4-8 weeks when I never have had any problems with Sony in the past.
All in all, if you're going to really use this camera, I do not recomend it. find maybe a newer version or another brand. Or by an extended warranty for sure!

I bought this camera to replace a DCR-SR42 Sony Camcorder. The biggest featured difference is the addition of the USB download on the DCR-SX40 camera. Although I have not used it long, it shares the same design basics as the older DCR-SR42 camera I owned. Although the camera is basic, I like the feel of it and the basic controls like the manual focus and exposure override allowing a bit of control over what you can shot. The 4 gig hard drive is on the small side but having used the larger 30 gig hard drive I find that you do not do a lot of extra wastefull overshooting of video material. The extra memory card allows for more footage if needed. Makes for a great travelling camera that takes up little room.

This excellent camcorder best married with a 2008 or '09 MacIntosh computer model, not older. Here is what you need in (necessary) detail according to a trusted Mac dealer in Montreal, Canada:
iMovie 09 - iMovie 09 requires an Intel-based Mac, Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster).
- High-definition video requires at least 1GB of RAM, at least. 2Gb is okay, 4Gb best.
-Approximately 4GB of available disk space. If you want to edit long movies, quadruple needed space. -Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later - QuickTime 7.5.5 or later
-AVCHD video requires a Mac with an Intel Core Duo processor or better.
- 24-bit recording in GarageBand requires a Mac OS X-compatible audio interface with support for 24-bit audio. Some features require Internet access and/or MobileMe; additional fees and terms apply.
- Burning DVDs requires an Apple SuperDrive or compatible third-party DVD burner.

I love the camera, now very affordable, for its lack of moving parts and therefore prospect of longevity compared to what I expect or the more delicate though long-memoried hard drive camcorders out there.
One glitch: though famous for their graphics, etc., the Mac consumer has not been graced with any help from Sony or others in downloading the movies, so am still searching for the right software. Pity. Am optimistic though.

This is the first video camera that I have owned. I have used a lot of them in the past, but we decided to get one because we are expecting our first child any day now and want to be able to have these moments for the future. I think it meets every need I have regarding a easy to use, durable, 'point and shoot' , great quality video camera. HD is only 720p [editor's note: this is not an HD camera], but that's all I need for family movies. 4Gig memory is limiting, I purchased an extra 8gig stick for extra storage. Easy to use software.. had it out of the box, filming and making my own dvd in no time. The fool proof design is so easy anyone can use it.

w you did that????? I can't get my iMovie to detect my camera automatically. I have the SX40 and just bought it and am a bit frustrated that it isn't so easy to upload : (
I can not get mine to work, wish I had thought of this when I got the junk. I bought a sony MP3 player and it does not work with ITunes. I am done with sony, though on the MP3 Player it is probably mac that will not allow it to work.
Guess we're all stuck with getting an upgrade, extra software of some kind, or never watching/editing our movies. Could be worse - I'm pretty sure the video card and software for PC manipulation would be at least as much bother and expense.

I am a UK resident who comes over to the US every year and I want to check the output compatibility to UK TV to ensure I can show pictures on UK TV (NSTC I think ). Has the camcorder dual mode here? In the UK this camcorder is badged SX41 rather than SX40 but it looks the same externally. So what is the difference?
