Is there a mini dv camcorder with auxillary mic. and headphones for under 500.00

Headphones? You're on your own on that one. But in the SD world, look for a ZR800. It has an external mic. If you're going HD, I believe the HV20 has it. But it's well above $500.

Thanks for responding so quickly James. I'm thinking I may have to spend more to get one I really want. I'm leaning towards the Sony brand because of the good attachments they have available, like lenses and that cool waterproof housing. They add to the expense but they could be bought at a later date. I think the biggest hangup is that my 12 yr. old who is "helping" me save up for the camcorder wants to get one NOW or as soon to now as possible.

Great. An opportunity to teach him/her patience! LOL. In the meantime, you could pick up one of these for your 12 year old to play with.
