Can the usb interface replace firewire?

I am at a church and we use a projection program called SongShow plus. We use a camcorder sometimes to project through this program using the camera's firewire port. I see that almost all the Sony HD cameras don't have firewire. Is that because the faster USB can do the same thing as firewire or is it just a feature that is for higher end cameras?

USB isn't faster, nor is it higher end. It's a competitor. Firewire is still the larger pipeline for video and much better than USB 2. The irony is that Sony developed Firewire (they called it iLink).

Canon still uses firewire.
