This is one of the drags about using a hard drive camcorder - the convenience you get by recording directly to a hard drive is lost when trying to use the footage. If you want to shoot video and then edit it to take out wasted scenes, add titles and music, etc., you're taking a hit in video quality by shooting native with hard drive based camcorders. While convenient, tend to record in MPEG2 (some JVC cameras do give you an option to record in AVI so you may want to consider this). This gives you the same problem. Additionally, you will also have to "re-encode" (also called demuxing) the footage into an editable format. It's a hassle for those of us who wish to edit our videos as a hobby.

A good option is MPEG Streamclip by Squared 5. WIth that, you can re-encode the footage to a more editable format for iMovie or Final Cut.

As for editing you rmovies on your Macbook, you already have a good start with iMovie. It's a great basic editor. You're other best options include both Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro (depending on your budget).

I think i worded my question incorrectly! I am actually having probs getting the videos off the camera - i have heard of many work arounds but none seem to work. Do you know if the new mac software coverts the videos from mpeg1 to mpeg4???

Handbrake will. Getting them off the camera could be of issue since it's USB 2.0 and not firewire. You could check to see if the optional docking station has firewire. If so, then that could perhaps work for you. Otherwise, you may be stuck going through the analog window by using something like the old Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge. You can get that on eBay for about $150 used (since Dazzle was swallowed up by Pinnacle).
