Going to Africa - need a rugged, HD camcorder

Due to weight restrictions, I want to take a camcorder vs a DSC. Want 1080p recording capability, 16:9 and 4:3. Need ability to record close up, but also good zoom for long distance recording. Image stabilization. Considering digital media (hard disc or removable media) for later editing into a movie and capturing individual still photographs. Battery life is important as well as light weight.

Mark.
I would strongly suggest a miniDV cam over hard drive and DVD disc.

MiniDV media is very reliable and inexpensive in comparison.

Hard drive cams will require additional hard drives for media storage before editing and can only be transferred electronically which is timely and not as cost efficient in the long run.

DVD cams are not computer friendly and holds less video footage on disc, DVD cams are also the least reliable and the most problematic.

I recommend the Canon HV20 which gives you the best of both worlds, SD(standard definition) and HD(high definition) video in standard TV format and wide screen.

As far as ruggedness goes, there is no such thing for consumer camcorders unless you build a protective housing for it. I would recommend an extended warranty plan. The industrial/commercial cam models are built for durability, but you will have pay the price.

Happy Shopping!
