What would you recomend? The canon dc-40 or the panasonic pv-gs500

These are two different camcorders. The DC40 stores images on a DVD (or optionally a memory card) whereas the Panasonic GS500 uses MiniDV tape. The Panasonic is a 3 CCD model, which tends to mean it can record colors better. The Canon is a little more than 1lb, the Panasonic a little more than 3lbs. I think the GS500 is a better camcorder.

Personally, I would go with the Canon DCR-SR80 which has a built-in hard disk over the DC40 record to DVD version.

Yeah and the Canon DCR-SR80 is considerably more expensive. My experience with this camera is that it was great not to have to convert output to play it on my computer and it's very light weight with a 10X optical zoom. I found this camera a great value for the money!
