how do I plug an external (ie clip on) mic on a sr 80?

Connect it to the remote jack, there's a compartment for it after you open the LCD screen.

The remote jack on Sony DCR-SR80 is *not* for microphone. It is for wired remote control of camera functions using LANC protocol. For example the Sony VCT-870RM tripod has controls for zoom and record on the pan-tilt handle.

What you really want is Sony VMCK100 microphone adapter. This is an Active Interface Shoe to mini phone plug adapter for use with external mono or stereo microphones.

Try searching for these model numbers with google to find where to buy them.
