How do I Edit Video on PC Shot with Hard Drive camcorder

I noticed in some answers to questions about the Sony Hard Drive video cameras that the cameras shoot in MPEG-2 format and it appears that isn't all that easy to edit on a pc with a program like pinnacle. I am a rank amateur that mostly shoots home videos of my kids and I like to edit them down in Studio 9. My mini DV camera is broken and I was thinking of upgrading to a hard drive camera and then a read some of those answers making it sound like i would end up having to go through a few steps and lose quality to edit the stuff on my PC. If I intend to edit my video down on home editing software like Studio, am I better off sticking with the Mini DV format. I had an Elura 100 that unfortantely got wet, but I liked it before i fried it and was thinking of buying another one or moving up to a Sony hard drive camera. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

At this juncture, you are much better off with MiniDV for editing than any other format of camera. It's just a simple fact that miniDV records uncompressed, whereas hard drive cameras record in MPEG2. This forces you to reencode the footage into an editable format for importing into your editor.

One exception to this rule is JVC Everio line, which tends to give you the option of AVI or MPEG2 in recording formats. That is promising. But if you liked the Elura 100, I say go with that.

James DeRuvo, your answer is wrong. (Not an insult). The Mpeg-2 does not have to be re-encoded. It's just that JVC "hides" some details from the common user than can easily be solved.

Some s/w tools lets you edit MPEG-2 directly (delete not good parts, add transitions etc.). No re-encoding needed (so the quality is still GOOD). For instance, Womble Mpeg Video Wizard (http://www.womble.com/). Very good one.

Inspector Derrick,

I found the editing software that came with the DCR 80 to be useless. I purchased Power Director v.6 and have had no problems using the dolby encoded stereo sound that comes with the camera. I have been able to create DVD's in less than an hour. That's really good considering I am a complete novice. Program comes with all you need to create movies, most of it is just click and drag.
