Compare the Wide Anlge lens for the DCR 40 as opposed to the DCR 60

I purchased a Sony DCR SR40 and they sold me the .45x Wide Angle Lends. What is the difference if I got the Sony DCR SR60 with the 16:9 Wide Select feature?

Wide screen is like getting more of the edges. A wide angle lens isn't really a lens. It's a teleconverter, which will squeeze the aspect ratio (and affect the light coming into the image by a stop) what you see still into a 4:3 format. With 16:9, you see more detail without that squeezing.

A good way to see this is to rent a "full screen" dvd of a movie, say Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. And then compare it with watching the Wide Screen version. You'll notice pretty quickly what you can see in Wide screen and what you can't with the full screen.

IMHO, you'd be better off with the DCR 60. If it isn't too late, I'd make a return and switch. Course, the salesman won't be happy as he will lose his "spiff" on the teleconverter, but go figure.
