About the only thing I can suggest is, that it's a free download, why not give it a try? Regardless, it's evident your SONY isn't compatible with your MAC and as such, you'll need to reencode your MPEG2 footage, which is yet another hurdle.

You could also try a program called "ffmpegX" for reencoding it to a more easily importable format, especially in iMovie.

Apple offers a 20 dollars dowload program that will let you encode the mpeg-2 into quicktime format. You should be all set

Try MPEG Streamclip. It's free. Google is your friend.

My research shows that the camera records in AC3 audio which isnt supported my the mpeg-2 playback component for quicktime. The AC3 codec out there is only for AVI files so again, we are still stuck.

Well, welcome to the beauty of using SONY HD. Proprietary avenues which force you to jump through hoops to do what you want.

There are numerous encoders out there which can change the AC3 to MP3. Quicktime Pro may be able to do it. At $29.95, you should own a copy anyway.

You may want to try the latest version of quicktime. Since iMovie 08 now has AVCHD support, it may be that you can do it now.

BTW - If you're happy with the answer you received, you can simply click on "Mark for best answer" bubble and it will close out the question. Thanks for posting it and Good luck!

I have converted Sony's DCR-SR80 many ways, Streamclip, Visual Hub, Quicktime, etc. They all work (poorly), but the best quality is to capture it by using the included A/V cable through an Analog/Digital converter (ie: canopus) then to your computer via FireWire and capturing it with Final Cut Pro. As far as the camera, MiniDV is a much easier route with better quality.
