It may be that due to opening and closing or twisting the LCD cover has caused the wiring to become ablated and broken. But that should cause the viewfinder monitor not to work if the LCD is closed. Has there been any impact damage which may explain the problem? Have you confirmed the camera still records even though you can't see it?

It may need to be repaired. But remember this rule of thumb. If repair charges head north of 50-60% of what you paid for it, you're better off getting a new camera. And since this camera is a few years old now, you'd be better off investing in it's newer and upgraded cousin.

Bring up your menu - when your in capture mode.

if you can see the menu clearly and not the image your trying to record that is your CCD IMAGE SENSOR. Which is like "the eye" of the camera. Lots of CCD's are on re-call by the sony company and you should look up your model on google with the words "ccd recall". they will repair it for free if it is under recall or you can contact a local repair shop otherwise.
Heres a good shop in san diego called pro photo repair. (858) 277-3700. They have fixed a lot of my stuff.
