Yes, iMovie 08 does support AVCHD. However, iMovie 08 has been dumbed down considerably. As such, many iMovie fans have been so disappointed that Apple has offered a download of the previous version for free to any iMovie 08 user. But that version doesn't support AVCHD ... that I know of.

I have the HDR-CX7 with AVCHD and iMovie 08. It will import the AVCHD files and converts them into .mov files. This is not ideal at the moment as video that seemed to play back fine when sent directly to an hdtv ends up with unacceptable motion blurs when played back on a new iMac or used in iMovie 08. So I'm going to look for a different importing solution so that my video doesn't become damage by a flawed conversion.

If anyone has had this experience or has any answers I would love to hear about it.

Actually, what you may want to try is downgrading back to iMovie `06. Mac users haven't been too happy with 08, and Apple has offered a free download for 08 users as a result.

You may also want to check out Final Cut Pro Express.

Thank you for your reply, but I would like to hear from someone that knows specificly how to achieve maximum video quality from the AVCHD source. I understand that people didn't like the changes in 08 from 06 as far as editing goes, but in my readings it has been mentioned that 06 does not support AVCHD. Editors aside, my concern is the quality of the importing and/or conversion process. I'm dismayed that a conversion is even suggested by the software if it is going to destroy the fidelity of the orginal and then ask me if I want to delete the files from the camera. If Final Cut Pro Express is a viable software I will have to spend the money, I have already spent at least 4500 on the camera and my iMac, so I can't stop now until it does what it is advertised to do.

Which, frankly, is the reason why I would've gone with a Canon.

That reason that you would have go with Canon is what? Does it import properly with iMovie? Is there a problem with the Sony Source data?

The issue is generally that SONY has compatibility problems with Apple whereas Canon seems to be designed with the MAC in mind.

But I believe I've read that the HR1 has surmounted much of the Mac compatibility issues.
