Need help with editing .mpg files

Hi, I bought this camera last spring and I am now getting into video editing and special effects. I use Adobe After Effects CS3 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 as my main editing software, however none of these support the AVCHD high def format provided by the camera. When I use the standard definition mode of the camera, it records in .mpg (or mpeg) format. This, to my knowledge, is not accepted by these 2 programs. My question is, is there anything I can do aside from converting them, in order to edit these file types?

I don't really have any converting programs, but is there any free ones out there that can convert an entire directory? I take many shots of the same scenes in order to use the best ones to edit, so I have many video files that need converting.

Use Sony Vegas, there's a free trial on the Sony site, plus there's amateur versions available for $50-100. Best option in my opinion. You can also get a recording card that costs about $250, which basically plugs in to the camcorder and sends the High Def format and saves it as and MPEG2 format. I don't really like this workaround, its expensive and may not work depending on your computer. I believe Nero programs also have a way of converting the AVCHD to MPEG2, as does Cineform. As for a free converter, it's kind of hard to find one, you can search on google, but there's always limits to the programs. Like they put a water mark on your video, or only do the first 1 minute, or give your computer 6 trojans... If you go the free way you take risks, so I'd recommend just paying for the cheap version of Sony Vegas, or at least downloading the trial first.

Hey Aditya, thanks for the response, but my main concern is that Sony Vegas is an editing program in itself (like Premiere) and I haven't really heard good things about it. The only thing I like about it is that it lets you use AVCHD, but aside from that I really have no use for it. If I'm gonna spend money on an editing program I'd just go with the new CS4 version of Premiere which also supports AVCHD, but I'm trying to wait on buying that since I just got the CS3 package. Thanks anyway, but I was really just looking to see if anyone knew of a free way to either convert my files or get my programs to support them, like a codec download or something.

There should be a trial version of Sony Vegas, for free, full version, but only for 30 days (I think). I like Premiere more than Vegas, but they each have some advantages, including the AVCHD editing for Vegas.

I guess.. eh I guess I'll just have to stick with converting files for now... it'll be so much easier when Premiere Pro CS4 is in my hands.
