Well, my first beef with the JVC GZ-MG 505, is that it records in MPEG2. This may be no big deal if you don't plan on editing your footage, but having to reencode the footage in order to edit and then having to recompress it back to MPEG2 to burn to DVD is problematic. The SR1 doesn't fair much better, as the video quality isn't as good as it good be.

While HD is coming along, I personally don't think it's quite ready for prime time. It's still an early adopter toy and until market saturation for HD reaches a tipping point, it's one expensive toy when you consider needing to purchase an HD TV, HF DVD player, etc.

Thanx for your reply James. Actually, I already own a HD TV But I would only go for SONY if the picture quality on video is siginificantly better for it than JVC MG505. Price diff. is abt. $400-500 I think & I was wondering if it is worth paying. The hassle of transferring recordings as you say on JVC is also a put-off but I dont know how is it for Sony SR1. Cheers.

Well, it records to a hard drive. And as such, it records in either AVCHD (HD) (a proprietary SONY format) and MPEG2-PS (SD). Both of these would require the same requirement to reencode the footage in order to edit it. :(

Oh, Thanks for your help. I think I will still go for Sony, if only I could find it with english software & manual in Netherlands at a reasonable price.

THANKS JAMES. In the end, taking up your advice, I ended up buying nothing eventually. But now I thinks its about time to buy or do you think one should wait more. Currently I guess Canon HG10 fair better in the competition in HD/HD camcorders.
