Could the latest firmware update from Sony to fix the audio problem of some of HDR-SR1s also change the menu on the LCD from Japanese to English?

I have just purchased a Japanese version of this cam on ebay. I don't have the camare yet but I have been warned that they will not accept returns owing to the machine being for the Japanese market. I have read that some machines had an issue with the audio in HD and I have downloaded already the firmware from Sony that should fix it. I am just wondering if this firmware will actually change the menus on the LCD to English, as I believe the firmware was for the european and american versions of the camera. Neeedless to say I bought it like that because it was over $300 cheaper!

Page 22 in the English manual talks about how to change the language settings. I'm not sure that the Japanese will be easy to navigate, but once you get the buttons pushed properly, you should be back to English.

Sounds like doable. Strange that the guy selling the machine said it could not be changed when it seems just an option. Many thanks James, looking forward to getting my hands on this little beast.

Err, well no, it was not to be. I got the item, all in Japanese, as expected and there is no english or simplified english as options after navigating through the menus for "clock/alternative language".

So my questions still holds, in case anybody can help.

I was told by UK sony that it should work. I have tried it but the upgrade protocol failed. At some point along the protocol, when you swtich on the camera, the camera should read the new firmware from the memory stick. In my case, it just switches on as normal and doesnt read from the memory stick (for this purpose, it reads its contents otherwise). I got a friend that has emailed Sony Japan and we are waiting for an answer. I'll post the solution when I find it.

I have tried this to dead with the help of a Japanese friend. It has not worked. There is something that prevents the update following the protocol on the sony upgrade website. If anybodyelse finds a solution, possible a hack, please post it here. Gonz

I am also with same problem.. that I am Brazilian and I live in the japão and I acquired this camcorder but the firmware for the that I noticed to solve only the part of the sound and no the system complet.other detail is that the firmware European( case I wanted because of the language portugues) for the camcorder HDR-UX1E and not for HDR-UX1 I think can give some damage if we do for the European system if you have knows about some thing tells me for the time being please only got the manual in Portuguese in English has here also if you don't have http://www.sonydigital-link.com/manuals/manuals.aspx?l=pt#m=HDR-UX1E in the case it is of the European model

Sony Japan has a BAD rep for keeping their machines in Japan Non Universal... They Don't offer much in the lines of firmware updates that make it more international.. just to update formats and or bugs and fixes.. .I have 3 sony products that are still in japanese... but I've played with them enough (with the help of the English manual) to get the buttons down so its more "muscle memory" :D
Good luck
