I am studying American Sign Language and looking for a camcorder to record at normal speed and play back at slow speed for "reading" the signs.

If this is a good recorder for my purpose, is there an easy way to add captions on the included proprietary software, or will I have to import the images into a photo editing program. I am not a techie, have never owned a camera and I don't want to spend long hours trying to master quirky programs. Thanks for your time.

It's relatively easy. Slow motion is done in "post" using a video editor. And since you'll have to use an editor to insert titles, you sholud be able to do it relatively easy with what you have on hand. Windows - you have Movie Maker (although I prefer Adobe Premiere Elements) and for Mac you have iMovie. Both can do it.
