According to the official Canon website, only the RS60E3 will operate on this camera. This remote is a wired switch with plug and is NOT wireless. That explains why the RC1 and 5 wouldn't work for you.
I had never noticed this before that the 1000D Rebel XS does not have a remote control detector for wireless remote controls.

It is possible you might be able to find a non-Canon third party device which would plug into the socket for the RS60E3 and would accept signals from the RC1 and/or RC5. I have heard of such for other cameras but I don't know of any specifically.
