Well, if you don't know a lot about SLR cameras yet, especially digital ones, I'd say the xSi is a good place to start. Most of it depends really on how much money you want to spend, what lenses you have access to, etc. Every camera makes an SLR at just about every price range, from $500 all the way up to $10000 (some even higher), and within the same price range you'll find very comparable cameras. That's not to say that every camera is the same, but you'll hardly notice differences. The xSi is a very good camera, especially for beginners, and produces great results, but there are also Nikons that compete very well. If you have a greater access to Nikon lenses, go with a Nikon; if Canon go with a Canon. If you're starting from scratch, then definitely go with the xSi, the features vs price ratio as slightly better than the Nikon competitor.
