I am new to this and want to do a wide variety of picture and take a few classes.
I assume the always propose 18-55 is but what 1 or to other lenses would be good?

That's a good one. Then I'd pick up something around a 70-210 or there abouts. You could get an all in one, but I have them to be overly weighty and slower for having on the camera all the time.
