This blog has some great fixes for dealing with error 99. It often involves either the dirtying of the lens contacts (which can be cleaned with a pencil eraser) or the camera is rejecting a third party lens.

I have a cannon 400 d still under warranty ,
I changed a the disk from 1MB to 2Mb and found that error 99 came up.
One of the pins in the camera got bent.
Has any one had the same trouble. The card can only be put in the correct way round owing to the guide grooves, there is no slack so how can this happen.
Any ideas and is my warranty still covered .

Well we can't speak for Canon, but I'm thinking that as long as the camera doesn't look to be abused, Canon should cover it. But you'd best contact Canon to ascertain if it is.

I have a Canon XSI and I receive the message error 99. The camera was 2 weeks old when I sent it to Canon. After a couple of weeks they sent me an email stating the camera has water damage and it would cost me $598.00 to have it fixed! The camera was never been in water and the only water the camera ever touched was I layed it down on a table that had a few drops of water. I can not believe this would cost the damage. The Canon would not take the warranty! They are a bunch of crooks
