Settings For Good Indoor Basketball/Netball Shots

I have the Canon 400D with the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens and a EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens . Could anyone here suggest what settings I would need to use to get good shots of my son and daughter with these (preferably action shots). I tried taking a few photos last week and they were either blurry or way too dark. I have done a bit of reading on this board and I get the feeling that these lenses aren't going to get the job done but I thought it would be better if I ask the pros. Thanks for your help and what a fantastic site this is!

I would instruct you to adjust your ASA speed to 800 or even 1600 on the 400d. It would also help if you use a flash acc. instead of the flash that comes with the camera and stay within about 16 feet of your subject. I hope this helps

I didn't really want to use a flash as it might put the players off but I did a bit of reading around this board and some others and have just purchased a Canon 50mm f/1.8 II , hopefully this will allow me to take photos without the flash although I will have to get a bit closer.

If you set your ISO higher it will help. The faster lens can't hurt either. You can purchase a faster tele lens W/ image stabilization that Canon makes that really work. Thanks

That's the type of shot I would love to take Steve, I'd imagine with your lens you would have to be quite close to the action and I'd have to get even closer....
