Before you purchase the xTi, take a look at the new xSi, its a fantastic camera, with good upgrades. I would get a long zoom lens, possibly a 100-300mm if you plan to go to Africa, I don't know if you'll necessarily need a really low f value unless you're planning to take fast moving action pictures of wildlife. If you want to do scenery invest in a wide angle lens (the zoom doesn't have to be that high). With the zoom lens, the kit lens (the one that comes with it), and the wide angle lens, you should be able to tackle just about anything that comes along.
