Have started a business doing shots of kids in my gardens in all kinds of light. Have come across the XTi w/EFS 18-55 lens. Good choice?

I'm used to using a Canon film camera with manual zoom lens, but want to get into the digital age. I'm working with lots of shade, very bright areas and action shots with pets. Please advise what I need to get started w/digital.
thanks!

The XTI should be just fine for your needs. Gives you manual control but isn't as highly priced as some of the professional DSLRs. I know at least a few people who shoot weddings and other pro situations with the XTI and are very happy. Moving from film, I'm sure you'll find all the manual control you need in this camera.

The 18-55 is a nice all-purpose lens; the main thing here is that when you buy this camera with the lens, you're getting the lens at a VERY good price, so I never recommend that someone NOT buy it. It's a deal, basically. The lens could certainly be better in some ways, but for what you're paying for it, it's well worth it. You might find it suits your needs, too; depending on factors like how far away you're shooting, among other things. You may find that using a lens hood in bright light will improve your corner quality immensely.

Can't thank you enough for the info. I'm looking forward to the digital age (!!) and expect to find it even better than whatever I've done before. If there's another lense for close shots or zoom, please respond. Otherwise, thanks again. This is such a great forum.

No problem! I agree about digital. As much as I love film, there's nothing to match digital when it comes to efficiency and low-cost. I'm sure you'll love it.

There are some great lenses for zoom that work with the XTI. The issue you'll run into, naturally, is going to be cost; lenses aren't cheap! So I recommend doing plenty of research before you buy something; you'll find a wealth of info and sample photos online for pretty much every available lens, so if you find one you may want, go to google.com and look it up before buying. Another thing to consider is that you don't have to buy a Canon lens. There are other companies that make lenses which are compatible with Canon cameras and they may give you more bang for your buck. It varies by lens, of course, but two that I've found to be fairly reliable are Tamron and Sigma lenses.
