The XTi is an SLR. SLR stands for "single lens reflex." From wiki:

"The single-lens reflex (SLR) camera uses an automatic moving mirror system which permits the photographer to see exactly what will be captured by the film or digital imaging system, as opposed to non-SLR cameras where the view through the viewfinder could be significantly different from what was captured on film." (Or flash card in the case of a digital camera.)

Currently, Nikon and Canon are at the top of their game and are neck in neck for quality. But what's important here is to think "system" rather than camera. This takes the horse race to the lenses and there the competition is tight as well. But Nikon does have the advantage of being able to use over 40 years of SLR film camera lenses directly in manual mode. That's great for professionals or prosumers who have been into photography as a hobby for years.

As a user of the XSi (The XTi's followup) I can tell you that the Canon Digital Rebel series is an excellent entry level DSLR.
