My XTi has recently been producing blurry action shots.

I am using the action mode and I've purchased a new battery but it hasn't helped. In the past I was able to get great action shots in the Action Mode. What could the problem be? I am taking basketball action shots inside a gymnasium and outdoor baseball action shots, sometimes at night. HELP!

Well, the issue is largely that in available light, you're camera doesn't have enough speed in the lens based on the high shutter speed it's choosing. As such, you're probably getting motion blur. If you can, you should try a flash even during the day). If that isn't possible, some things you can do is use a tripod, pan with the action, and up the ISO. And getting a faster lens will help, especially at the extreme end of the focal length.

Also, try resetting the camera and updating the firmware by checking the Canon website.

James- Thank you. Can you recommend a lens that would work well for the action shots. I've been considering buying the 300mm Cannon lens so that I can zoom even closer but if it won't be fast enough to catch action I don't want to waste my money. Thanks.

You could use a 300mm. But it isn't really all that necessary. Remember, a basketball court really isn't that large and given the choice of where to spend the extra coin, I'd think speed is paramount. And I'd also consider using a monopod to keep the the camera steady while you move the with action. Also, I'd bone up on some sites that have tips on Sports Photography, chiefly for basketball.

Try getting the 80-200mm or 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. This is pretty much the holy grail of sports photography lenses, but tends to costs $1000-2000. Try and find a good one used, B&H Photo and Video is usually a good option. I take a lot of sports photography at night as well, and pretty much all you can do is spend the money and get a telephoto f/2.8 lens. I use my 70-200mm f/2.8 all the time, so it was more than worth the investment I put into it.

eBay is another good option, but pay attention to the seller feedback ratings to guard against any problems.
