football photography

I have been taking phots of my son football games for the past two years. They have been decent but my question is, what are the appropiate settings to get nice crisp clean pictures with the background blurred out or out of focus. Only the subject matter clean and crisp. I use the quantaray 70-300 tele photo lens with continuous shooting for action shots. I have the camera set in AV mode.

Use the high shutter speed of at least 1/250. Then open your camera lens setting all the way. Also, the more distance between the foreground subject and the background, the better. This will help the depth of field of your lens. But a 70-300 may not be fast enough to set your depth of field according to what you need to blur the background. But you can do that by panning with your subject. It'll be blurred background movement, but still pretty good for what you're trying to accomplish.

Also, read up on sports photography sites. There's a wealth of information out there on the Net on how to get a great action sports shot.
