You first have to ask what your budget is. If you don't mind spending more, I would go with a dSLR camera. With the capability to change lenses and settings for low to bright light and action shots to stills, these make great cameras. You can get a good entry level camera that isn't too daunting that will grow with you as your skills become more advanced like the Canon XTi. For indoor shots (like volleyball in a gym), I would recommend a camera with an aperture of at least f/2.8. Outdoor events, like your daughters' soccer games, will work find with the lens that comes with the camera. All in all, this will be a great camera for what you want to do. Good luck.

I would have to agree with Andrew. Because most digicams don't have very fast shutter speeds, they will blur most sports photos. A dSLR, which stands for digital single lens reflex will allow you as fast enough shutter speed to stop the motion immidiately when you hit the shutter button. A digicam, however, will wait a few seconds before taking the picture, which by that time the subject will probably be gone. It will also take a few seconds to record to the memory card, allowing you less time to take more photos. I think that you would be really unhappy with a standard digicam. Therefore, I would highly recommend the Canon XT or XTi, Nikon D40 or D50 or D80.
